If you want to understand how important a truck's suspension really is, spend a day riding in a heavy-duty truck on an unpaved African road.
On smooth highways, suspension components are easy to forget. On rough roads, they become impossible to ignore.
I once experienced this in a HOWO dump truck traveling through northern Ghana. The truck was carrying a heavy load over a road full of potholes and uneven surfaces. Every impact was transferred through the chassis, yet the driver continued as if nothing unusual was happening.

“You get used to the road. You don't get used to a broken spring.”

A damaged torque rod or worn bushing may cause:

The trade-off is a more complex system.
An air suspension system may include air springs, height-control valves, air lines, fittings, and other components that are not found on a conventional leaf-spring setup.
Air springs can deteriorate with age and exposure to heat and ozone. Air leaks can also cause the compressor to work more frequently than it should.

Don't Forget the Front Axle and Steering
The front suspension has an additional responsibility: it works closely with the steering system.
Components such as tie rod ends, drag links, king pins, and steering knuckles all need to work together correctly.
Wear in these parts can affect steering precision and tyre wear.
Possible warning signs include:
Excessive steering play
Vehicle wandering
Steering wheel vibration
Uneven front tyre wear
Abnormal movement in steering joints
These components deserve particular attention because a suspension problem at the front of the truck can also become a steering and safety problem.
Simple Maintenance Can Prevent Major Suspension Repairs
Heavy truck suspension maintenance does not always require complicated procedures.
Some of the most useful maintenance tasks are simple:
Lubricate suspension pins and bushings where grease fittings are provided. Proper lubrication reduces friction and helps prevent premature wear.
Keep leaf springs clean. Dirt and mud trapped between spring leaves can contribute to abrasive wear and corrosion.
Check spring U-bolts. Loose U-bolts can allow movement between the axle and spring assembly and should be checked according to the manufacturer's torque specifications.
Inspect bump stops. Damaged or missing bump stops can allow excessive suspension travel and increase impact loads on the chassis and suspension mounts.
